According to media reports, Ordnance Factories Board (OFB) has plans to introduce soon mounted gun systems (MGS) based on its Dhanush 155mm/52 calibre Guns soon to meet Indian Army’s requirement for 814 mounted gun systems (MGS). Dhanush 155mm/52 calibre Guns were first showcased at last year’s Defence Expo held in Goa which had cleared internal round of factory trials and was offered to Indian Army for trials.
Dhanush 155mm/45 calibre is all set to go for bulk order after it clears in final June Army trials but 155mm/52 calibre variant of Dhanush has not received the same level of backing due to DRDO developed Advanced Towed Artillery Gun (ATAG) 52-calibre gun which has received much attention due to its better capabilities over existing 155mm/52 calibre Guns out there .
By using Dhanush 155mm/52 calibre Guns mounted on 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) sourced from either Ashok Leyland or Tata Motors, OFB plans to get more orders for its upgraded 155mm/52 calibre Guns since it shares maximum commonality with Dhanush 155mm/45 variant which will go into mass production soon.
India already has placed orders with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for procurement of 100 K-9 Vajra self-propelled (SP), tracked howitzers and has already concluded a deal with BAE Systems for 145 ultralight howitzers for mountain formations. Only sanctioned purchase of 814 mounted gun systems (MGS) remains to be concluded but the way development of indigenous 155mm/52 calibre Guns are progressing, pending requirements for mounted gun systems (MGS) might go indigenous way soon.
